Cines Movie Ticket Booking App

Cines is a movie ticket booking app that streamlines the movie going experiences by taking advantage of the user's social connections.

Cines is a ticket booking app that simplifies buying tickets with friends.

Problem

How might we optimize buying movie tickets with a group of friends?

I noticed that the experience of booking movie tickets for a group of friends is usually clunky and cumbersome as most movie ticket booking apps did not make optimization for groups. I want to create a movie booking experience that can compete in the market, improve user experience and drive users to more enjoyable group movie experiences.

Persona - Sarah

“I want me and my friends to have a good time at the movies.”

Sarah is a software engineer at a tech company and lives in the bay area. She and her group of 5 friends goes out to movies on the weekends when something really excites them comes out. She and her friends are spread out across the bay and often need to coordinate to find the right theater and the right time.

Pain points

Unintuitive theater location

A lot of movie ticket apps only display theaters' distance from you, which makes it hard to determine which theater is the best for everyone in the group.

Sharing tickets with friends is a hassle

The process of sharing and redeeming tickets at the theater among multiple people is often clunky and messy, and always shrouded in uncertainty.

Too much information all at once

Many movie ticket apps have very cluttered interfaces overflowing with information and bad visual hierarchy. Many users report that finding the right information can be very frustrating and confusing

user Flow

Breaking down what goes where

A movie ticket booking app has a lot of information and moving parts that need to be organized and fit into a usable flow, especially with the addition of the user's friends into this process. It was important for me to list out all of the necessary actions and information to make sure everything is taken into account in a logical manner.

Lo-fi Prototype Iteration

Optimizing for a simpler user flow

Giving users the option to add friends to their movie orders opened up a lot of possible approaches to starting an order. My initial approach was to provide as many entry points for the user as possible.

However, user testing suggested that minimizing the decisions needed is preferable for users, so I consolidated the app into a single flow to simplify the experience.

Design Solution

Friend-based movie recs

Check out what everyone's watching

Cines lets you know what movies your friends have been watching so you won't miss out on the latest movie discussions.

Invite your Friends

Expedite booking tickets with friends

Cines allows you to add friends with accounts (or guest too!) to your ticket booking process to streamline buying tickets for a group of friends.

Better Theater Recs

Closest theater, for everyone

Cines will recommend movie theaters that are close to all of the members in the group for base on where each member's address.

Predictive ticket allocation

Tickets picked automatically

Each account is registered with an age and Cines will automatically pick the right category tickets to remove the need for an extra step.

Auto ticket sharing

Tickets automatically shared

When you are done purchasing your tickets, Cines will share the ticket QR code to all members of the party. Never worry about someone not having the ticket again.

reserve tickets for friends

Pay for all or split with friends

You can choose to pay for all your friends or you can reserve the selected seats notify your friends to purchase the reserved seats on their end.

Upcoming ticket

No more digging through emails for your ticket

When you purchase a ticket, Cines will bring it to the home screen so that it is easily seen and accessed when you need to show it at the theater.

Next steps

Implement more social base feature

A movie app that has a lot of emphasis on social connections can be easily expanded to include more social oriented features like reviews and posts. While I didn't have time for this project to implement these feature, it would be interesting to see how Cines may embrace them.

Detailing out how invited users receive tickets

Most of this project was focused on how one user buys tickets for his or her friends. A great next step would be to detail out how his or her friends will receive the ticket afterwards, and how they can bring it up when they are entering the theater.

What I Learned

Utilizing the component system in Figma

In this project I extensively utilized the component system in Figma to help automate updates in my prototypes, which greatly speeded up any changes that I needed to applied to my design. This practice also kept elements in the design consistent across different screens.

Thanks for watching.
